Megaways™ slots have now become fan favourites in the slot game space. Unsurprisingly, iSoftBet also wanted to be part of the action, leading Aztec Gold Megaways™ to become their first Megaways™ title released in December of 2019, with the studio acquiring its licence from Big Time Gaming earlier in April. So, what exactly has this veteran game studio delivered? Let’s jump in and find out!
As you might imagine given this game’s title, iSoftBet decided on taking its players on a trip to the Central American jungles and rainforests with this game, using ancient Mesoamerican civilisation and imagery as an additional backdrop. Let’s check out what inspiration the designers over at iSoftBet took from this historic place and time!
In keeping with the game’s theme, you’ll find the 6 reels on the side of an ancient Aztec temple. The design is full of details, like with the temple itself, which is complete with decorative stone animal fountain sculptures. At the top of the reels you’ll find the three Mini, Major, and Mega big wins in a similar decorative design.
In the background you’ll see a dense rainforest with streaks of light forming partial rainbows at the edge of the water from the fountains. We love this kind of attention to detail and think that it really shows the care the developer put into the game overall – in fact, iSoftBet’s other Megaways™ slots have stuck to the same great standard.
The symbols are done in a minimalistic but eye-catching and colourful way, which we also greatly appreciated. All in all, the game really has some style to show off!
The soundtrack’s quite engaging too. It’s a traditional-sounding song that continuously plays and features panpipes or a flute of some kind. While it sounds fitting for the theme, we’re not so sure about how authentic or true-to-history it is. That might be holding this game to too high a standard if we expected that, though. At any rate, it’s a great theme song that’s easy on the ears!
So, which symbols do you have to look out for?
A 9 to Ace Royals set fills out the lower-paying symbol list. For the higher-paying symbols, you’ll find a falcon, snake, cheetah, and Aztec god symbols. The Aztec god symbol is the highest-paying of the lot, with a 50x payout for 6-of-a-kind.
In the game’s paytable, the payouts are somewhat annoyingly only offered in coins, with no way to change the standard 20-coin bet. The bet is instead changed from the coin value selector. Because of this, the coin payout amounts on the paytable can be a little confusing. We thought we’d take care of that ourselves for you:
For the higher-paying symbol, the payouts are as follows:
Apart from these main symbols, you’ll find a few other special symbols on your reels from time to time. The first of these is the Wild Symbol, which is styled like a brick with the word ‘wild’ over it. This can substitute for any other symbols apart from our next symbol, the Sun Disc Scatter Symbol.
If you manage to land 5 of the Sun Disc Scatter Symbols, you’ll gain access to this slot’s bonus game, the Aztec Gold Cash Respins. We’ll cover this in detail further on in the features section below.
Considering this was iSoftBet’s first Megaways™ title, when there is a huge Megaways™ games list, it’s understandable that they wanted to make a little bit of a splash. Well, they’ve certainly tried with their interesting Aztec Gold Cash Respins feature covered below. Apart from that, you’ll also find some standard Megaways™ features, such as cascading reels. It would’ve been a true shame had these been left out. There are also exciting Mini, Major, Mega multipliers that can come into play, just to keep things interesting! Let’s go through all of these in more detail.
Cascading reels has become a feature we tend to expect on Megaways™ reels nowadays. This simple but exciting mechanic is a perfect combination with all those different ways to win. The concept itself is as follows: winning combinations will be removed from the reels, allowing more symbols to fall from above for a chance of more winning ways! This feature can keep happening indefinitely, although that’s quite unlikely. Nevertheless, a few extra winning combinations for that same single spin can’t hurt, and are certainly always welcome.
At any point during the base game, this reel modifier may become active. Once it does, it will boost the Megaways™ on your reels to their maximum 117,649! Now that’s a nice added extra we’d never say no to.
This is where those Sun Disc Scatter Symbols from earlier come in handy! If you land 5 or more of these symbols onto your reels, you’ll be taken to the Aztec Gold Cash Respins bonus game. Here, you’ll have a similar set of reels to the first game, with the 5 symbols from earlier still in their place. Only Sun Disc Scatter Symbols will be in play for the bonus game.
You’ll also have 3 free spins as soon as you enter the bonus game. With each spin, you’ll want to land more disc scatters onto your reels; with each disc scatter you land, the spin counter will be reset to 3!
Each scatter will have a multiplier number on it, which will count towards the payout at the end of the bonus game round. If you manage to fill a whole reel with Sun Disc Scatters, the multiplier at the top of the specific reel will come into play. The multiplier depends on the number of rows on the reel, meaning it can range from 3x to 7x. It will be multiplied with each scatter symbol on the reel below it, making for some potentially massive wins!
Apart from the normal Sun Disc Scatters with numbered multipliers on them, there are also scatters with ‘Mini’, ‘Major’ and ‘Mega’ words on them. These will trigger one of those three huge multipliers at the top of the reels!
Let’s get down to those all-important specifications for this game. Design and features are all well and good, but they fall apart without a spine of good numbers to back them up.
The Aztec Gold Megaways™ RTP is set at 95.99%. This is just a hair under the average for most slot games, which is fine for all kinds of players. You won’t notice the difference from a standard 96% RTP slot game.
Now this is where the real fun lies. Aztec Gold Megaways™ reportedly has an astronomical max win of 19,200x. Not even the Aztecs (or was it the Mayans?) could have predicted their civilisation would be associated with such a huge prize!
You’ll find that Aztec Gold Megaways™ has a medium-high volatility. We’d guess it errs more on the side of high than medium, though, judging by the difference in payout for 5-of-a-kind and 6-of-a-kind of the highest paying symbol. What this’ll mean in practice is that you might encounter some dry spells or a few low-paying wins in a row. It also means that high-paying wins will be less frequent. On the upside, however, it does mean that those high-paying wins will really pay high.
We’d generally recommend high volatility slots to players who like to take risks, and who have a well-padded bankroll. As always, though, we recommend you set hard limits on the number of losses you’ll tolerate, and stop playing as soon as you go over them.
As we mentioned earlier, Aztec Gold Megaways™ always makes bets of 20 coins. Through changing the value of coins, you can effectively change the bet size. It’s a system that can be frustrating, but it’s what we’ve got to work with. You’ll be able to make bets as small as €0.20, with the max bet allowed being €20.
We think this range should suit most people. Having said that, given the high volatility of this slot, we did expect the maximum bet to be a little larger.
Aztec Gold Megaways™ might take inspiration from ancient civilisations, but when it comes to device support, it’s firmly in the 21st century! You’ll find no issues playing this game from your phone or tablet. Of course, laptops and desktops are perfectly supported too.
You don’t need to worry about the gameplay – it’s easy enough to grasp, and controls are a breeze. Let’s go through all the buttons and their functions.
On the far left of the screen is a settings toggle allowing you to turn game sounds on or off. In the centre, there is the main cluster of controls. You’ll find a large green spin button in the middle. This is flanked to the left and right by two other buttons. These are the information button and autospin button respectively.
The Aztec Gold Megaways™ autospin allows you options for setting a win & loss limit, apart from the number of spins to autospin for. To the autospin button’s right there is a bet selector, which will allow you to change the value of the coins.
The aim of the game here is to land 3 or more of the same kind of symbol on reels, which are next to each other, starting from reel one. This is the basic principle for how Megaways™ slots work. Additionally, there are, of course, the bonus features, which can help you gain larger wins!
