Megaways™ slots are video slots that operate a ground-breaking mechanic developed by Big Time Gaming. Through this innovation, video slots can now have over 100,000 paylines, come with many bonuses and features, and offer more ways to win. Our experts explain how they work and break down the best titles to try out at the best Megaways™ casinos below.
Megaways™ slots work on a mechanic that was created by Big Time Gaming, one of the world’s top game developers. These games take the format of video slots, but are designed with six reels that can accommodate anywhere between two and seven symbols each, and sometimes even a horizontal reel with an extra four symbols. When they reach their full capacity (seven symbols on each reel), the game gives you up to 117,649 Megaways™ to win (and sometimes even more), meaning that you could land a lot more wins than in traditional video slots.
Of course, the best Megaways™ slots also come with great themes and graphics, as well as a whole host of additional features, including free spins, bonus games, and unlimited multipliers. As you can imagine, this slots series has become incredibly popular over the past few years, with Big Time Gaming now licensing the Megaways™ mechanic to many game developers. As a result, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Although – or perhaps because – this was the very first ever Megaways™ title, this game is still especially popular. Bonanza Megaways™ has players looking for buried treasure, with precious stones trapped in rocks making up the majority of the symbols. With an RTP of 96%, the slot has six reels that accommodate up to six symbols each, plus a horizontal reel with four symbols. It also comes with cascading reels, free spins, and unlimited win multipliers. This medium-to-high variance game gives you a potential max win of 12,000x your stake!
This game may not be as well-known as some other titles in the series, but it should be, especially since it’s one of the very few Megaways™ slots that come with a progressive jackpot. Its theme revolves around Irish lore with pots of gold making a cameo, and it all plays out on a grid made up of six horizontal reels and a vertical one. Irish Riches Megaways™ has low volatility, and comes with free spins, cascading reels, and a progressive jackpot that has reached over £3/€3.54 million in the past!
Ted Megaways™ is based on the 2012 box-office hit of the same name, featuring the main characters of the film including John, Lori, and Ted. As a game, this has an RTP of 96.03%, and a grid made up of six reels that can accommodate up to six symbols, plus a horizontal one with four. In terms of bonuses, you’ll have plenty to enjoy here. Of course, there are cascading reels, but there is also a Mystery Symbol, free spins, and a bonus buy feature for European players. The max win on this high-volatility game is 50,000x your stake!
We’re sure everyone’s played – or at least heard of – the most iconic board game of all time, but what is it like as a Megaways™ slot? Well, it’s fabulous. This medium-variance slot has a multitude of features, including free spins, an Adventure Bonus, and cascading reels. The game has an RTP of 96.50% and a maximum win of 14,700x your stake!
What makes this game special is all in the name, which was given due to the slot's prehistorical theme as well as just how many Megaways™ you can potentially get: 1,058,841! But is it worth playing? Totally. 1 Million Megaways™ BC is a high-volatility game that has beautiful, colourful graphics and comes with cascading reels, multipliers, free spins, sticky wilds, and the bonus buy feature. Over and above that, it gives you the opportunity to win up to 45,000x your stake.
Megaways™ slots were introduced to the public in 2016 with Bonanza Megaways™, a gold mine-themed video-slot that has had a huge impact in the world of video slots. It has been followed by Extra Chilli Megaways™, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Megaways™, and Genie Jackpots Megaways™, which are some of the most successful Megaways™ slots so far.
The huge success of the series resulted in a great number of releases, meaning that players can enjoy a great variety of games with the Megaways™ engine implemented. Ready to sink your teeth into one of the top Megaways™ slots? Well, it’s much easier than you’d think, especially if you follow our step-by-step guide below!
Ever since the release of Bonanza Megaways™ and Extra Chilli Megaways™ (both by Big Time Gaming), the world of the Megaways™ slot has grown exponentially. Today, there is a wide selection of Megaways™ slots to choose from, complete with titles in a variety of themes, and with exceptionally exciting bonuses. We have listed some of our favourites on this page, but we have countless reviews elsewhere on our site to help you make informed choices.
While playing Megaways™ demos is totally optional, we thoroughly recommend doing so. Playing for free before playing Megaways™ slots for real money will give you a better understanding of the game and the features.
Once you’ve made your pick, you’ll need to find a Megaways™ casino that offersthe game. There are now hundreds of online casinos stocking dozens of Megaways™ slots each. In each of our Megaways™ slot reviews, we include a list of UK and European casinos where you can play the title in question; however, if you’d like to conduct your own research instead, we have a ‘How to Choose the Best Megaways™ Casino’ guide further down this page. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should only go for a safe and secure website.
Once you’ve signed up and made it to the game’s page on the casino, it’s time to start playing. Before doing so, though, take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the symbols, the special features, and the paytable (how much each symbol pays). This will help you understand how the game works, and you’ll know what to expect and when.
Finally, it’s time to start taking those amazing Megaways™ games for a spin! The first thing you need to do is choose your bet size and to base it on your own budget – it’s important here to keep proper bankroll management in mind. When you’re happy with your bet size, just hit the spin button or set up the auto-spins feature. Enjoy!
When you first start playing Megaways™ slots, you may be confused about how your winnings are being determined – but it’s not as difficult as it may first appear.
The first thing we need to keep in mind is that when Big Time Gaming was creating the Megaways™ mechanic, its main aim was to get rid of fixed paylines. So, in a traditional video slot, you’d only win when you’d have a winning combination made up of three or more symbols that are on the same, straight line – usually starting from the leftmost reel. With Megaways™, however, a winning combination can be made up of adjacent symbols starting from the leftmost reel, but which are not directly next to the other symbols (i.e. a position or two lower or higher). This can be seen clearly in the paytable of Blueprint Gaming’s Ted Megaways™ slot below:
The second thing is understanding how the number of Megaways™ is calculated.
At maximum capacity, which is seven symbols on each of the six reels, you’d get 117,649 Megaways™. This is worked out by multiplying all the symbols together: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649 Megaways™.
However, most of the time, you won’t get seven symbols on each of the six reels. Seeing as the number of Megaways™ changes after every spin, the game (and you, if you so wish to) has to once again multiply the number of symbols.
To make this easier to understand, we took Big Time Gaming’s Monopoly Megaways™ for a spin, and got the following:
So, to find out the number of Megaways™, we multiplied all those symbols (7 × 3 × 6 × 6 × 4 × 5) and ended up with a total of 15,120 Megaways™ – which is the number shown in the box at the top of the game.
Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, when a Megaways™ slot has the extra, horizontal reel, all you have to do is add each symbol in the horizontal reel to the number of symbols in the corresponding vertical reel. So, as the screenshot from Blueprint Gaming’s Safari Gold Megaways™ shows below, we have:
The best Megaways™ slots don’t just come with more paylines, but also with some incredible features that will knock your socks off!
The vast majority of Megaways™ slots (though not all) come with the cascading reels feature. This feature basically sees all symbols in a winning combination being replaced by more symbols automatically, without the player needing to re-spin. Of course, what this ultimately means is that you can have more than one win for the same price. Below is an example of how this looks in Pirates’ Plenty Megaways™ by Red Tiger Gaming.
The free spins are another popular, and practically ubiquitous, special feature. This is basically what it says on the tin, and they are usually triggered by landing three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the grid. In most games, the scatter symbol will be something related to the game – in Big Time Gaming’s Extra Chilli Megaways™, for example, it appears in the form of three blocks that come together to spell out the word ‘HOT’.
Many free spins in the best Megaways™ slots also come with – wait for it! – unlimited multipliers. While this usually begins at 1x your stake, this will go up by one unit every time you land a winning combination, and it can keep increasing to (technically) infinity. This is usually how you can win the ultimate jackpot in a Megaways™ game.
As Megaways™ video slots continue to progress, new features keep being added to the games. One of the more recent additions is the Mystery symbol, which first made its appearance in Blueprint Gaming’s Diamond Mine Megaways™.
These symbols usually feature the game’s logo and fall on the grid just like all other symbols. Nevertheless, these change shape and form to reveal other symbols from the paytable. Their aim is to give you better and bigger wins – in fact, usually all Mystery symbols that land on the grid at the same time transform into the same symbol to give you better winning potential. Below is a screenshot from iSoftBet’s Majestic Megaways™, in which the Mystery symbol is the moon.
A number of Megaways™ slots also have extra bonus games, which you can also think of as side-quests. These often work in relation to the free spins.
In Relax Gaming’s Temple Tumble Megaways™, for example, when you land free spins, you get to choose from three different options, depending on whether you prefer better multipliers, more free spins, or a mix. In Blueprint Gaming’s Safari Gold Megaways™, meanwhile, with the bonus buy feature, your minimum amount of Megaways™ and multipliers can be determined through a wheel.
As we’ve seen above, the biggest wins on Megaways™ can only happen during the free spins feature – but waiting for these to be triggered can take a while, as well as cost you quite a bit of dosh. Thankfully, thanks to Big Time Gaming’s genius idea, which was first presented in White Rabbit Megaways™, players can buy into free spins. This is usually done through a dedicated Bonus Buy button, with the free spins costing 100x your stake.
Be aware, however, that UK players will not find this feature, as it has been banned by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission.
RTP stands for Return to Player, and is calculated by how much of each €/£1 a player spends on the game will be returned to them within the span of a million spins. That may seem unachievable, but in essence, the higher a game’s RTP is, the more chances you have of actually winning some cash.
When it comes to RTP, Megaways™ games are renowned for having, on average, a higher percentage than industry standards, meaning that you should be more likely to win than when playing traditional slots.
Megaways™ slots with the highest RTPs include Big Time Gaming’s White Rabbit Megaways™ with an RTP of 97.24%, iSoftBet’s Aztec Gold Megaways™ with 96.99%, Big Time Gaming’s Queen of Riches Megaways™ with 96.90%, and Blueprint Gaming’s Primal Megaways™ with 96.76%.
Joining a mobile casino is very easy, too. In fact, all the sites we mention have websites that easily adapt to any screen – with some having dedicated Megaways™ mobile apps that allow you to carry around multiple games in your pocket.
One thing you will need to keep in mind when playing any casino game on your phone is to only do so when you are connected to a safe and secure network so as to keep your personal and financial details safe. This is especially true if you’re connecting to a WiFi network. Mobile networks are, of course, very safe, too, but do make sure you have enough mobile data to be able to play, as you don’t want to end up with an exorbitant mobile phone bill!
There are two reasons why people enjoy Megaways™ slots free play. The first is that these video slots can be incredibly fun even if you don’t win any actual money; the second is that they’re a great way to learn the ropes and figure out whether you want to put your hard-earned cash on the game.
Many websites – including ours – offer these Megaways™ demos to give you the opportunity to easily test them out. The majority of sites do so, too. In fact, European players can simply log onto an online casino and play for free, without the need for registration or making a deposit. UK players, however, have to register even to play for free. This is mainly due to a United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) law which aims to protect minors and problem gamblers.
The only thing you need to remember when playing Megaways™ slots for free is that you won't receive any winnings. It’s purely for fun.
We've explained that Megaways™ slots are a registered trademark by Big Time Gaming, who have cemented their name in the industry thanks to their innovations in video slot gameplay. Since they first introduced the series, the Australia-based company has given us many great titles, including Bonanza Megaways™, Who Wants To be a Millionaire? Megaways™, and White Rabbit Megaways™.
Having said that, you won’t just find Big Time Gaming Megaways™. Over the past few years, the company has been licensing this mechanic to a myriad of other Megaways™ software developers that have created some fabulous titles of their own.
Blueprint Gaming, for example, brought Megaways™ and progressive jackpots together, thanks to titles like Irish Riches Megaways™ and Slots O’Gold Megaways™. NetEnt, meanwhile, teamed up with Red Tiger Gaming to develop Gonzo’s Quest Megaways™. This iconic game has retained its best-loved features – namely the unique Avalanche Reels feature – but now comes with cascading reels, multipliers, and 117,649 Megaways™.
Then there are WMS, who were originally founded all the way back in 1943, and have now become major contenders in the online casino world. In the Megaways™ department, the company has created some of the best-known games, including Montezuma Megaways™ and Raging Rhino Megaways™.
And no Megaways™ slots list would ever be complete without mentioning NextGen and their amazing Medusa Megaways™, or Bally Technologies and their uber-popular 88 Fortunes Megaways™. We also can't not mention iSoftBet with their Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways™ and Lightning Strike Megaways™.
Megaways™ caused huge waves in the online gambling community, particularly with fans of video slots. These games’ revolutionary mechanic totally changed the rules, and with more titles being released each and every week, they’ve got a cult following of their own. Of course, that’s also meant that it was a matter of time before developers created other mechanics based on the Megaways™ one, which is where the Megaclusters™ mechanic comes in.
In this mechanic, Big Time Gaming married the idea of cluster wins with that of Megaways™, essentially creating a game where each symbol in a winning cluster would be replaced by a further four symbols in every spin, with the grid potentially reaching eight reels and eight rows (a total of 256 symbols). This was then coupled with cascading reels, thus creating a game with huge winning potential.
At this point in time, there are only three such Megaclusters™ titles, but we’re sure we’ll see more in the near future!
Before we answer this question, we feel it’s our duty to point out that these two types of games are very different to each other. Moreover, Megaways™ have had a longer run, with more developers working on different titles.
Another take on the Megaways™ mechanic was the Megaquads™ mechanic by Big Time Gaming. In this case, the developers practically placed four 4×4 grids on the same game, giving you the opportunity to spin all four with just one button. These four mini-grids sometimes work independently of each other, while at other times, they interact. Together, these grids give you 256 ways to win, and also come with extra bonuses, including multipliers.
At the time of writing, there are only a handful of Megaquads™ slots – that said, they’re slowly gaining popularity, so we expect there to be more titles before too long!
Although they’re different, it’s easy to see how these two mechanics relate to each other. It’s with this in mind that we decided to explain the main pros and cons for each of them.
The Megaways™ mechanic has given a new dimension to the video slot world, with beautifully designed games full of features, bonuses, and more ways to win. Take all of this into consideration, and it’s of little wonder why so many people love Megaways™ slots. Don't just take our word for it – go ahead and check some out yourself!
Megaways™ slots are innovative video slots that run on a revolutionary mechanic created by Big Time Gaming. These slots have six reels that can accommodate up to seven symbols each, and at maximum capacity can offer up to 117,649 ways of winning (although, for some games, it can actually be more).
On top of giving players better chances of winning, Megaways™ slots usually come with some amazing bonus features, including free spins, unlimited multipliers, special symbols, side games, and cascading reels. All this is usually packaged in a themed game, together with great graphics and gameplay.
Megaways™ games give you better chances of winning, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into winning more. How much you win depends on many other factors, including your bet size, the type of symbol you manage to match up, and the volatility of the Megaways™ slot that you’ve chosen.
The vast majority of online casinos carry at least a handful of Megaways™ slots. In each of our reviews, we list legal and licensed casinos that carry that particular game.
For the most part, Megaways™ slots have a higher-than-usual RTP rate when compared to video slots. Nevertheless, RTP is different for each title.
Although Big Time Gaming developed the Megaways™ mechanic and still create legendary games, they have long licensed it out to many game developers out there. Most of them have done a pretty great job at creating Megaways™ title that live up to the hype, with our favourites being Blueprint Gaming, Relax Gaming, iSoftBet, NetEnt, and Pragmatic Play.
Yes – on top of in-game bonuses, you can also get a bonus when joining an online casino. These can include welcome packages, free spins, cashbacks, no deposit bonuses, Megaways™ free spins no deposit bonuses, and more. Nevertheless, always check the terms and conditions before claiming one of these offers.
Yes! European players can do so easily on most online casinos without the need to sign up or make a deposit. UK players can play at UK online casinos, too, but they’ll need to sign up due to a UKGC regulation.
This is done by multiplying the numbers of symbols on each reel together. So, if you’re lucky to get seven symbols on all six reels, you can work it out like so: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649 Megaways™.
Certainly not! Megaways™ are operated using a random number generator (RNG), which is in turn created by the game developer and usually certified by a third-party reviewer. This RNG cannot be changed by the casino or the player, ensuring the game is always fair on all parties involved.
There are Megaways™ games for every budget, with many allowing you to set either a very low stake or a very high one. How much you spend is down to you and your budget.
Most video slots have a set jackpot and stop at that. Nevertheless, there are now a number of progressive jackpot Megaways™ slots, including Relax Gaming’s Hypernova Megaways™, Reg Tiger Games’ Paddy Power Gold Megaways™, and Machina Megaways™, which was a collaboration between Kalamba Games and Relax Gaming.
